Solitaire is a fast play, rules-light solo roleplaying game, written to fulfil a specific need: to play the countless adventure packs, scenarios and modules the author has collected over the years, without having to relearn old game systems or try converting everything to one specific rules-set.
By necessity there is abstraction in this rules system, and some interpretation – but this is a solo game where no-one is going to question fairness or impartiality. The only aim here is to be entertained. Solitaire is built around a simple mechanic: to succeed, a character (or hero) rolls 2D6 to equal or beat a challenge rating (CR), such as ‘fix computer CR8’. If they have an Expertise in that area, they gain a +1 on the roll. CRs can reflect the difficulty of a task OR the fighting prowess of a foe. Expertise provides a +1 bonus, but the hero’s short Background description might also provide a bonus. To help create a solo narrative, encounters as well as words of Inspiration can be rolled to give meaning, or suggest events or situations. Filled with random tables for all kinds of genres and settings, as well as advice on playing solo. One rule-set - hundreds of hours of entertainment! [Solitaire is an expanded and re-written version of solo rules appering in the appendix of my booklet on immersive roleplaying called Imagine That] |

Imagine That looks at immersion in solo roleplaying - the player experience of ‘being there’, and of seeing the world through the eyes of the character. This book provides player guidance for those interested in solo roleplaying, and suggests tips and techniques for making the experience as immersive as possible. I’ll provide a working example of how that can be done, using it to illustrate the different ways in which immersion can be brought into your solo game session. All of this is optional and modular – adopt the techniques you feel will suit your games or your play style best. A rules-light game is included that is great for solo play, or a pick-up table-top game. The author has had a thirty-year career in writing, and written books on the Roman Empire, Iron Age Britain, Ancient Egypt, secret cults and the Vietnam War, and has also written books for Steve Jackson Games and Free League. He writes and publishes multiple solo RPGs on DrivethruRPG via Zozer Games. |
